This year one out of every five older adults in New York City will experience a mental health disorder such as depression or anxiety. However, very few will receive professional help, often due to financial hardship, disability, or lack of familiarity with the mental health system.
This PSA raises awareness about Service Program for Older People (SPOP)’s affordable mental health care services at locations throughout Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn and in the home for those who are unable to travel.
Service Program for Older People (SPOP)‘s mission is to enhance the quality of life of older adults and to foster their independent living through the delivery of comprehensive mental health and supportive services, advocacy and education. Founded in 1972 as part of Selfhelp Community Services, the agency was developed by a consortium of health care and social service providers that recognized the need for mental health services.
