On average, tax preparation fees are about $150 to $250 in New York. That’s about the same as two monthly MetroCards, three months of cell phone service or five boxes of diapers. High-quality tax prep is a significant expense to low income residents and New York City is committed to making IRS Certified Tax Assistance available and accessible to all. The city’s free tax prep sites help low-income New Yorkers get every penny of their hard-earned refund.
The Food Bank For New York City has been working to end food poverty in our five boroughs for 35 years. The Food Bank’s Tax Assistance Program provides low-income New Yorkers with free tax preparation services, helping them get the refunds and credits to which they are entitled. This includes the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), which alone can be worth up to $8,463 for families. Clients are eligible for Food Bank’s free income tax services if you earned $54,000 or less WITH dependents, or earned $30,000 or less with NO dependents.
